The Fleetwood Insurance Group traces its roots back to two well-respected insurance agencies with long histories in Kent County, Maryland. The Kirby-Fleetwood Agency was established in 1946 and operated in the Townshend Building located in downtown Chestertown.
In 1957, the name was changed to Fleetwood-MacBeth, Inc. and remained so until 1968. The Townshend-Kane Agency was also established around the same time and operated in the Hubbard Building, which is currently the Imperial Hotel. Both agencies competed until 1968 when they decided to merge. Fleetwood, Kane, MacBeth & McCown, Inc. (FKM&M) became the largest insurance agency in Kent County.
In 1971, FKM&M had outgrown its Chestertown office and moved to just outside of town where it remains today.
In 1974, Edward Athey joined the agency and the name of the company was changed to Fleetwood, Athey, MacBeth & MecCown, Inc. (FAM&M). Under Ed’s vision and stewardship, the agency continued to prosper in the next century. Ed’s easy way and values still guide us today, even though he is no longer with us.
In 2007, the agency was purchased and operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of The Peoples Bank, a local community bank.
In 2018, FAM&M changed its name to the Fleetwood Insurance Group to better define what it does – insurance! At the same time, the agency opened a branch office in Easton.
Fleetwood Insurance Group prides itself on its community involvement and its relationships, both with our valued company partners and our clients. We give both our time and money to causes near and dear to our neighbors. We believe strongly that we are here to leave things better than they were upon our arrival. You will often see us out and about whether it be as Character Counts coaches, Junior Achievement mentors, Relay for Life volunteers, Special Olympics coaches, serving on many local boards and any other ways we can find to give back to the community.
